KNOTS

There are several knots that need to be mastered as a Boys Scout. I will share photos here and provide you links to online animated versions. You should know their names, what each is used for, and how to tie them.

BOWLINE KNOT

BSA Handbook  pgs. 388-389

USE - The bowline knot forms a loop in a rope that will not slip.

CLOVE HITCH KNOT

BSA Handbook  pg. 387

USE - Clove comes from the word cleave, meaning "to hold" and it can be used to start most lashings.

SHEET BEND KNOT

BSA Handbook  pg. 390

USE - The Sheet Bend is a useful knot for tying two ropes together, even when rope sizes and materials differ greatly.

SQUARE KNOT

BSA Handbook  pg. 21

USE - The square knot is used for tying two similar size ropes together.  It is not the best knot, but it is a good place to start.

TAUT-LINE HITCH - 385

USE - This knot can be slipped to tighten or loosen a line, then holds fast under load. Useful for lines that may need adjustment. Campers like to use this knot to secure tent guy lines because the hitch slides freely, yet jams under load, making adjustments to the line easy.

 TIMBER HITCH - 386

USE - The timber hitch is a knot used by Scouts to drag a log. It is easy to tie, very secure when under tension, and easily comes apart with you release the tension. Typically you also add a half hitch further up the log.

TWO HALF HITCHES - 384

USE -A hitch is a knot that ties a rope to something. Friction caused by the wraps of the rope holds the hitch in place. Two half hitches forms a loop that can be adjusted to make it smaller or larger.
